A baby Western lowland gorilla named Zeytin, hugs the keeper at the Polenezkoy Zoo in Istanbul, on September 3, 2025. Ten months on and Polonezkoy Zoo staff say the little gorilla – now called Zeytin – is an entirely different creature from the traumatised infant brough to them in the hills outside Istanbul to recover from his trafficking ordeal. And his recovery means Zeytin – believed to be an endangered Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) – will soon be sent back to Nigeria where he began his journey, Turkish officials say, citing provisions under the CITES convention which limits the trade of protected animals.
