Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) are seen at the Punta San Juan National Reserve in the Marcona district, Ica department, southern Peru on September 30, 2025. Once teeming with birds, the cliffs of Punta San Juan de Marcona, in the arid south of Peru, are now almost deserted. Populations of sea lions and Humboldt penguins have also declined. Their colonies were decimated by avian flu in late 2022, but with the El Nio climate phenomenon driving away fish-rich waters, they have been further weakened. Overfishing deepens the crisis.
