On September 28, 2025, hippo Nala gave birth to twins, the Berlin Zoo announced on October 7, 2025. However, only one of the two male cubs survived, the other died shortly after birth. Hippopotamuses are listed as "endangered" on the IUCN Red List. According to the zoo, hippopotamuses cannot swim. They glide through the water by pushing themselves off the ground with their legs.
