An aerial picture taken with a drone shows the a destroyed and flooded houses in the village of Blatten, 4 months after a landslide destroyed the village, in Blatten, Switzerland, 30 September 2025 (issued 02 October 2025). On May 28, 2025, the village of Blatten in the Loetschental valley, Canton of Valais, was devastated when a section of the Birch Glacier collapsed, sending an avalanche of rock, ice, and debris into the Loetschental valley. About 90 percent of the village, including 130 houses and the parish church, was buried. The debris blocked the Lonza River, creating a large lake and raising concerns about flooding. The authorities in Blatten had already evacuated the village in the week before the glacier collapse, but a local shepherd lost his life. (Photo by Michael Buholzer/EPA)
