One of the three months-old West African lion cubs stands in its enclosure at Cerza Zoo, in Lisieux, northwestern France, on October 17, 2025. Three West African lionesses were born in August 2025 at Cerza Zoo, as part of the European Endangered Species Programmes (EEP). In the wild, there are believed to be only 1,700 North African lions left. The IUCN - International Union for Conservation of Nature - had already placed African lions at the “Vulnerable” level on the Red List of Endangered Species in 2004, and revised the situation in 2015 for West African lions, distinguishing them with a special category to classify them as “critically endangered”.
