ALL 2013 National Geographic Photo Contest – in HIGH RESOLUTION. Part 1: “Places”, Weeks 1-3

“Midnight in the Land of Fire and Ice”. In November 2012 Tolbachik Volcano on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula began erupting for the first time in 36 years. I travelled there in June 2013 to climb and photograph the volcano. While the intensity of the eruption had decreased, the volcano continued to spew fountains of lava. On this particular shoot I had climbed the volcano and spent a few hours shooting from the crater rim. At around midnight I was stumbling back to my camp over the treacherously loose lava blocks and I turned around to see this sight. There are more photos on my site www.amardevsingh.com. Photo location: Kamchatka, Russia. (Photo and caption by Amar Dev Singh/National Geographic Photo Contest)
