A nine-week old greater one-horned rhino calf and his mother were released into the Asian Plains exhibit this morning at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Thursday May 1, 2014 was the first time the male calf, born on February 25, had experienced such diverse terrain, having spent his first few weeks in a smaller maternity yard, and he was eager to explore the 40-acre habitat. The calf is named Parvesh, which means lord of celebration in the Hindi language. He may be young, but he is hefty and is already approaching 300 pounds. This is the second calf born to Alta; his sister, Charlees, who is 2 years old, was one of the first to greet the pair when they came into the field exhibit.
