Ukrainian soldiers burn referendum ballot slips that they said were falsified and seized from a car at a checkpoint in Mariupol, on May 11, 2014. Many observers said the referendum lacks credibility, that names were checked against a 2012 voters’ list but that anyone who turned up with a passport was allowed to vote, even if they weren’t on the list. At one polling station in Mariupol, many people brought multiple passports on behalf of relatives and openly filled out two, three or even four ballot slips themselves, observers said.
