2014 National Geographic Photo Contest, Week 13, Part 1

“A Malanka bear”. A young man poses for a portrait in a costume of a bear made of hay a couple of days before the traditional holiday of Malanka in the Ukrainian village of Krasnoilsk, Chernivtsi region, Ukraine. Malanka is a wild holiday that is marked on the eve of January 14, New Year according to the Julian calendar. Hundreds of people wear handmade masks and costumes and march through the streets of the village dancing and singing in the night and during the whole day.
