Participant Amanda Berrios walks the boardwalk in the 2014 Mermaid Parade at Coney Island on June 21, 2014 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. The Mermaid Parade began in 1983 and features participants dressed as mermaids and other sea creatures while paying homage to the former tradition of the Coney Island Mardi Gras which ran annually in the early fall from 1903-1954. This year New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife Chirlane McCray attended in costume along with their two children Dante and Chiara de Blasio who were chosen as King Neptune and Queen Mermaid, the highest held positions of the parade.
