An Olympic Airways airplane stands on the premises of the former Athens International airport, Hellenikon June 16, 2014. For about six decades Hellenikon was Athens' only airport but it closed down in 2001 to make way for a newer, more modern airport before the city hosted the 2004 Olympic Games. After languishing for years as a wasteland of crumbling terminals, Hellenikon is set for resurrection as a glitzy coastal resort. Lamda Development, controlled by Greece's powerful Latsis family and leading a consortium of Chinese and Abu-Dhabi based companies, has big dreams for the area since signing a 915 million euro deal for a 99-year lease in March 2014. A deserted alley in the ghost town of Apice, in the province of Benevento, southern Italy, 22 November 2016. After the Irpinia earthquake that took place in southern Italy on 23 November 1980, leaving at least 2,500 people dead, 8,000 injured and 250,000 homeless, the town in the heart of the Sannio area was evacuated and its residents moved into what has become the new Apice. Only recently the narrow streets and the tragically abandoned buildings have started, slowly, to repopulate. (Photo by Cesare Abbate/EPA)

Images of an American ghost town that was home to gold mines and features a plane which crashed during the filming of 3000 Miles to Graceland starring Kevin Costner and Kurt Russell reveal the remnants of the once thriving location. An assortment of rusted vehicles which include a canary yellow bus, caravans and cars have all been left behind in the desert. Other pictures of Nelson, Nevada show its desolate surroundings with only a couple of houses and museums scattered around the area. In one shot, a derelict petrol pump stands still after making its final sale years ago. The stunning photographs were taken by an American photographer known as Abandoned Southeast on a visit to Nelson, Nevada. The area was called Eldorado by the Spaniards who made the original discoveries of gold in the town. The notorious Techatticup gold and silver mine which was associated with crime and murders ran in the area from 1861 to 1942. It was the richest mine in Southern Nevada.
