“Poignancy”. Watching my friend (whom I had known since I was a little girl) with his young daughter, gave me a sense of profound poignancy. As I saw the thick fog swirl around the Sky deck on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower, I watched the city of Chicago completely disappear under the white mist. As my friend's daughter started drumming her fingers on the glass, I felt it was a primordial beat sweeping the past by and ushering the future in. Location: Willis Tower 103rd Floor, Chicago, IL. “Double, No, Triple Bubble”. While biking in the city of Chicago my significant other and I stopped to watch a street performer create giant bubbles. “Reflection”. Scene from a train station in Brussels, Belgium. This was truly a “caught” moment, un-staged. I call it “Reflection” because not only do we see someone in pain, in a moment of reflection, the effect of being shot through a window, and the resulting reflection, gives an almost ghost-like quality to the man, with the tracks suggesting something about his journey. In that regard, it has a powerful, almost conceptual quality. (Photo and caption by Adam Siers/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

“Enal with Pet Shark”. Enal, a young sea nomad, rides on the tail of a tawny nurse shark, in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Marine nomadism has almost completely disappeared in South East Asia as a result of severe marine degradation. I believe children such as Enal have stories that could prove pivotal in contemporary marine conservation. (Photo and caption by James Morgan/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

“Attacking Howler Monkey”. Due to a major tropical rainstorm my wife and I were forced to stay overnight in a Howler Monkey Rescue center in Panama. I used the time to explore the area and to take photos of the monkeys. Just after the rain finally stopped, I ran into this monkey that tried to mock attack me. I quickly took a couple of photos before retreating to a (more) safe distance. (Photo and caption by Christian Mueller-Planitz/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

“Curiosity...” Once I decided to take some photos, which would reflect the day-life of children, living in, simply saying, bad conditions in children's' homes. So, in one of such homes, near the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, when I was talking to the director of the home, this little sweethearts came out and starting to examine the situation. The boy stared at me for a second and suddenly ran away to hug her mother, sitting near. Meanwhile, boy's little sister, wondering what was happening outside, half-standing on her knees, was curiously involved in something that only she could understand that moment. “The Boy and the Beast”. To me, this image defines spontaneous. Spontaneous in that it was taken at about 1:30am after my 7 month old son decided he wanted to wake up and play with some toys. Spontaneous in that I decided at 1:30 in the morning to test my ability to trigger an off camera flash with the Nikon point and shoot I took this picture with. And spontaneous in that our dog Molly decided to walk in front of the camera and yawn the moment I took this shot. I love this picture. Our dog is being lit by the small flash on the point and shoot, my son is being lit by a hot shoe flash set to slave mode. Location: Issaquah, WA USA.
