“The Boy With A Scarf”. Looking to escape the massive crowds at the Great Pyramids, I strayed from the beaten path to stumble upon this child tending to a camel. This image was taken just days before the Egyptian Revolution started in January of 2011. His expression reminds me of the saying “the quiet before the storm”. “Indonesian Man Selling Corn”. This man waited patiently on Jimbaran Beach in Bali, Indonesia to sell corn to tourists after they ate their candlelit dinners on the beach. I waited and watched how the gorgeous sunset slowly started to match the lighting of his cart of corn and then walked over and asked him to take this portrait of him. I love how he gave me the “thumbs up”. (Photo and caption by Laura Grier/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

“All Smiles”. Our surgical team spent 2 weeks in the Western Highlands of Ethiopia performing obstetric fistula and uterine prolapse surgeries last November. I've never seen so many smiling ladies in a hospital before. The love and gratitude was overwhelming. This little girl was an orphan living on the hospital grounds and would come hang out with us on our breaks. Her smile and infectious laugh were an unbelievable gift. I look at this picture often and can't wait to go back next year. (Photo and caption by Kathryn Quenneville/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

“Warrior Eye”. The Karo is one of the greatest tribes found in Africa. It was almost midday and photographic conditions was extremely tough as the light was seriously harsh. I approached this individual warrior on the banks of Ethiopia's Omo River and focused as closely as possible on his eyes. He had the most amazing eyes I have ever seen on a human and reminded me of a predator staring intensely at his prey. (Photo and caption by Marius Coetzee/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

A found cow pelvis bone and the reflections that appear on sunglass lenses appear to give a terrestrial, fifteen year-old boy extraterrestrial qualities during a birthday celebration at a ranch. “Pipedreams”. As the call from mosques sound throughout the city, men make their way to begin prayer at this time of Eid. They walk in clothes freshly dressed, through busy streets and building sites. These pipes are some of the obstacals, though also used as shade from the intense sun and as a place of social gathering once prayer has been be completed. As for now, men and boys will soon repetedly bow their heads, all the while strengthening their faith. And I wonder at times, do they ever ask Allah for particular blessings, or do their most intimate hopes remain nothing more than pipe dreams. Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh. “My 95 year old aunt”. I visited my family in Saint Petersburg in December and had a chance to see my great aunt. We share the first name, Olya. She is 95, rarely leaves her apartment, yet she is very sharp and curious. She even tutors a neighbor's kid in math! She lived through Stalin's 1930s repressions, the Second World War, deaths of many relatives, including my grandma, her sister, and the collapse of the Soviet Union. She had to escape Tajikistan in 1990s, leaving everything behind, yet she brought her spirit and garden tools with her. Every time I'm there, I think: “Please, will I see you next time...” Location: Saint Petersburg, Russia. (Photo and caption by Olya Gary/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)
