The Week in Pictures: Animals, October 4 – October 11, 2014

Bua Noi (Little Lotus), 28, a gorilla, leans on the bars of her cage on World Animal Day, on the top floor of a old shopping center, at Pata Zoo in Bangkok, Thailand, 04 October 2014. Bua Noi has been housed at the zoo since she was bought from a zoo in Germany to Thailand in 1988, living on concrete behind bars and a glass wall, without any green living vegetation inside. A campaign has collected more than 35,000 signatures to try and exert pressure to have the gorilla moved to more natural surroundings, calling on the end of such caged zoos in favor of natural wildlife areas. Declared in 1931 to highlight the plight of endangered species such as the gorilla, World Animal Day falls on the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. This year it is timed with a report from World Wildlife Fund revealing wildlife across the world has dropped by more than 50 percent in 40 years, as humans continue to show their over consumption and destruction of other species and their habitats.
