Echoes of War

In this photo taken Saturday, May 2, 2015, members of an excavation team searching for the remains of Soviet soldiers killed during WWII, dig former trenches trying to find remains of Soviet soldiers near the village of Gaitolovo, 60 km (37 miles) east of St. Petersburg, Russia. Soviet troops fought in the area from 1941 to 1944 to try to break the siege of Leningrad, as St. Petersburg was called at the time. Hundreds of thousands were killed. Hundreds of people came to a World War II battleground outside St. Petersburg this week to bury the remains of 964 Soviet soldiers recovered by volunteer search teams. Fifty crimson coffins containing skulls and bones were solemnly buried at the Sinyavino Heights memorial as Russian war songs played and an honor guard fired a salute.
