Kuwait holds annual pearl diving festivals to revive the old traditions of pearl hunting, which was the main source of wealth pre-oil discovery in Kuwait. Young Kuwaitis spent a week-long journey on traditional sailboats or dhows and used the same equipment as their forefathers, before returning back to shore to search for pearls inside shells they collected and celebrate with folk singing and dancing.
