The Day in Photos – September 23, 2015

This artist rendering handout by the CNRS on Wednesday September 23, 2015 shows “Collision of a rock body with the early Earth, causing pulverization of terrestrial crust”. Researchers in France from CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and the Blaise Pascal university in Clermont-Ferrand say they have at last solved a long-standing mystery about the formation of Earth. Scientists were unable to understand why there were differences between the chemical compositions of our planet and a class of meteorites called enstatite chondrites, which are thought to be remains of the primordial material from which the Earth was formed. Now, for the first time, the team has put forward a complete scenario that explains these differences. The work is published in the British journal Nature Communications.
