A Look at Life in Cuba

After all the guests have left her fourth birthday party, Belinda Gutierrez sits under the table that held her birthday cake on March 30, 2015. Her family recently moved to Camilo Cienfuegos in 2012 from Havana to have more space and a more peaceful life. Belinda has her own room which is filled with toys and clothes. The family lives in one of the original wooden homes built by the Hershey Company for the workers. Her father is a manager at The Havana Club rum distillery in nearby Santa Cruz del Norte. About 30 miles east of Havana lies the now defunct sugar mill town of Camilo Cienfuegos which was built by the famous American chocolatier, Milton Hershey, and was originally named Hershey. The town grew up around a giant sugar mill and featured American style amenities in Cuba, a golf course, baseball diamond, power plant, water system, school and rows of nice affordable wooden houses for the workers. Hershey also built an electric railway system which connects Hershey to the large cities of Havana and Matanzas allowing the sugar and employees to come and go with ease. (Photo by Sarah L.
