A Look at Life in Cuba

Nueva Gerona is the capital of Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth}. Marble mountains that are mined in a nearby quarry, tower over one dirt road neighborhood. A pack of dogs bark near near chunks of the marble on the road. Isle of Youth is about 40 miles wide, it is the seventh-largest landmass in the Caribbean, and one of its most sparsely populated, with only about 80,000 residents. It is not part of any province and is therefore administered directly by the central government. It was once inhabited by pirates and is believed to be the inspiration for the novel “Treasure Island.” (Photo by Sarah L. Voisin/The Washington Post)
