The Day in Photos – July 2, 2016, Part 2/2

Balls of colored glass are seen in the Khalifeh handicraft workshop, Sarafand village, southern Lebanon, 30 June 2016. The Khalifeh family still use the Phoenician oven to mold glass in the glassblowing workshop in the southern coastal village of Sarafand, they were given a new lease of life thanks to an initiative for recycling waste glass normally destined for landfills. Their factory recycle stained glass or transparent glass bottles of all kinds which are collected from restaurants or from broken glass. The plant produces pitchers, cups, vases, tables, candles and colored glass bottles, as well as granular beads and balls of forms, colors and sizes, made professionally neat, displayed in a shop at Sarafand, waiting for tourists or Lebanese visitors to buy. The town, which inherited the industry since the days of the Phoenicians till the late seventies, has at least six factories. (Photo by Nabil Mounzer/EPA)
