China has a current population of 1.38 billion as of 06 July 2016 according to the latest United Nations estimates. This is equivalent to 18.72 percent of the total world population, making it the most populous country in the world. The most populous country of the world has a peculiar demographic situation as a result of more than three decades of the 'one child policy'. With 40 million more of men than women (and around 18 million more of boys under 15 than girls of the same age, according to official data), it is forecasted that by 2020 there will be at least 30 million of young men unable to find a spouse in the country. World Population Day falls on 11 July. (Photo by Wu Hong/EPA)
