The Day in Photos – August 30, 2016

A picture made available on 29 August 2016 shows Filipino police investigators conducting an investigation on a dead body following a police operation against illegal drugs in Kaloocan City, north of Manila, Philippines, 28 August 2016. During his address marking National Hero's Day on 29 August, President Rodrigo Duterte stated that he would take full responsibility for his no-nonsense war against illegal drugs, placing a two million Philippine peso (40,000 euro or 44,800 US dollar) bounty for police officers who are protecting the drug trade in the country. Duterte told police authorities to step up their campaign against illegal drugs in the country. According to police data which was submitted to a Senate investigation on 23 August by Director General Ronald dela Rosa, at least 756 people were slain during anti-drug police operations and 1,160 more deaths committed by still unknown killers based on a tally from 01 July to 23 August; putting the overall toll of lives at 1,916 or an average of 36 deaths per day, killed in a violent campaign against drugs in the Philippines since President Rodrigo Duterte came to office.
