Detail of ankle instruments made from cans worn by a South African Xhosa traditional dancer performing for Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane during a stakeholder meeting at the Community Hall in Masiphumelele, Cape Town, South Africa, 05 May 2017. South African Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane is on a countrywide roadshow trying to asses at grassroots level the situation in communities across South Africa. Masiphumelele has an active investigation with the South African Human Rights Commission regarding land issues and Water and Sanitation issues. The stakeholder meeting in Masiphumelele enabled the Public Protector to listen to the community and its problems. Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane took the position as CEO of the Public Protectors office in October 2016 succeeding former Law Reform Commissioner and advocate, Thuli Madonsela. The Office of the Public Protector was established to support constitutional democracy in the country and is an external state institution tasked with the investigation of misconduct in any state affairs and all aspects of government including that of public administration and is independent of the government.
