A Look at Life in China

Local Chinese residents use the Yinggeliu cableway to take a ride in an open-air steel cage travelling from Zhaotong's Maozu village to Liangshan's Yanjiang village across the Jinshajiang River, Butuo county, Liangshan Yi, Sichuan province, China on May 21, 2017. Arguably one of China's most harrowing forms of local transportation is set to be retired. The Yinggeliu cableway, straddling the Jinshajiang River in Liangshan county in southwest China's Sichuan province, is going to be replaced with a bridge. Locals in Liangshan County have been forced to use the cableway for years to get across the Jinshajiang River, riding in an open-air steel gondola. The gondola, similar in design to a shark cage, moves along a pair of steel wires some 400 meters above the Jinshajiang River. The “slip rope to bridge” project was launched in May of 2013, and is expected to be completed in the near future. (Photo by Imaginechina/Rex Features/Shutterstock)
