Metro Manila has been facing an increasing amount of floods due to overuse of groundwater causing the city to sink, as well as rapid rise in sea levels which has been over double the global average. The Philippines has been among the top five countries vulnerable to climate change over recent years while reports state coastal areas including parts of Manila are already below sea level causing further devastation during natural disasters, such as Typhoon Haiyan which killed thousands of people and made millions homeless in 2013. In Manila, slum dwellers face an increasing amount of threat living along the coast as floods and storms have been exacerbated flooding while there is little the residents can do except relocate to higher ground.
