Iraqi salt workers harvest salt in saline water in the town of Diwaniyah, around 160 kilometres (100 miles) south of the capital Baghdad. The salt harvest season in Iraq lasts from April until October annually, as workers cultivate the marshes left by the rain, selling the salt by the bag for a sum of 5000 Iraqi dinars (equivalent to 4 US dollars), to be later sold to laboratories for crushing and purification.
