Contemporary issues story nominee: Ireland’s struggle to overturn anti-abortion laws, by Olivia Harris. A 1983 referendum resulted in an amendment to the Irish constitution, reinforcing a ban on terminations, even those pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. On 25 May 2018, Ireland voted by a large majority to overturn these abortion laws, among the most restrictive in the world.
