A Look at Life in Japan

This May 1, 2020, photo provided by Sumida Aquarium shows a child, seen on FaceTime, trying to look at garden eels at the aquarium's fish tank during a demonstration prior to the event titled “Garden Eels Face Show Festival” in Tokyo. The Japanese aquarium is organizing FaceTime sessions for garden eels so that they won’t go too far in their own social distancing and forget their human fans who used to gather outside their fish tank. About 300 garden eels used to pop up and down from their individual shelters dug in the sand, and let their bread stick-shaped body sway in the water. While having limited interactions with humans for two months since the aquarium temporarily closed under the coronavirus measures, the eels have largely withdrawn into their own burrows, and even hid from their keepers.
