Members of the Yanomami people in the Surucucu region, Alto Alegre municipality, Roraima state, Brazil, 01 July 2020. The coronavirus has entered the largest indigenous land in Brazil and threatens the historical guardians of the Amazon. After centuries of fighting, the Yanomami people are now facing a "silent enemy" who has already killed at least four members of their ethnic group, including three babies. Protected by an infinite blanket of dense vegetation that covers the states of Roraima, bordering Venezuela, and Amazonas (north), the Yanomami villages are located deep in the Amazon jungle, in an area of nine million hectares – a surface similar to that of Austria – with just 28,000 inhabitants.
