A Look at Life in Africa

A Kenyan teenage mother looks on the mirror as she plays with her baby during her lunch break at the Serene Haven Girls Secondary School, in Kiawara in Kieni, Nyeri, Kenya, 10 February 2021. The private school in Central Kenya was founded by Elizabeth Wanjiru Muriuki with an aim to open doors to teenage pregnant girls, teenage mothers, and their babies, as a second chance by ensuring they get an education despite the stigma. The school hosts at least 20 girls with 8 pregnant and 12 already delivered who either got pregnant or gave birth during the country’s lockdown due to COVID-19. The school allows the teenage mothers to live with their babies in their dormitories where they come to attend to them during their break times from their classes. (Photo by Daniel Irungu/EPA/EFE)
