Animals this Week

A gray four-eyed opossum (Philander possum) with its young is released into its natural habitat along with other species in Chinandega, Nicaragua, 28 February 2021. All these animals, mostly rescued from abuse and trade, were returned to the wild, previously trained to survive, although some, such as opossums and foxes, were fearful when leaving and stayed quite close to their rescuers. The National Zoo of Nicaragua, which does not extract species from their natural habitat but does reproduce them, has the National Animal Rescue Center, which trains hundreds of specimens each year and carries out dozens of releases in private areas and better preserved reserves in Nicaragua.
