The Day in Photos – April 15, 2021

Mr. Jean (C) (not his real name) throws saw dust into a coffin while him and his team of eight carpenters make cheap coffins on the street, even though this activity is prohibited on the public highway, in Antananarivo on April 14, 2021. Since the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in Madagascar, which saw the number of deaths increase in the capital, the demand for coffins has also increased considerably. For the past three weeks, Mr. Jean and his team have been producing between 15 and 20 coffins per day, whereas before they were producing only 3 or 4 per day. The coffins, made of pine wood in one hour, are sold between 90,000 and 210,000 Ariary (between 20 and 47 euros). (Photo by RIJASOLO/AFP Photo)
