In picture, the large, adjustable soil bin contains lunar simulant and allows engineers to mimic the Moon's terrain. NASA's lunar rover Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (or VIPER), which will explore the extreme environment of the Moon in search of water ice and other potential resources, is expected to land on the lunar south pole in late 2023 on a 100-day mission.
