A shepherd watches the flock graze on a pasture near by coal-fired power plant “Kosova B” in the town of Obilic, Kosovo, 18 October 2021 (issued 04 November 2021). Installed since the 1950s, the main energy systems in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro are based on coal, an abundant raw material in the region. While the EU intensifies the decarbonization of its electricity generation, the non-EU Balkan countries continue to rely on coal, polluting more than the rest of Europe as a whole, with devastating effects on the local population.
