Humans and Animals

A chimpanzee holds its hand out to catch a piece of pineapple thrown by an animal care specialists on one of the islands on the outskirts of Marshall City on November 18, 2021. In 1974 an American non-profit blood bank, the New York Blood Centre (NYBC), set up a virus-testing laboratory in Liberia. Over four hundred chimpanzees were kept in cages and experimented on, against Hepatitis B and other diseases. During the Liberian War, in the late 1990s early 2000s, the scientist closed the Laboratory and left the remaining infected chimps on six islands. These islands did not have enough food or any drinkable water for the chimpanzees to survive. Since then, they have been given food and water by volunteers and caretakers as they live out their lives. (Photo by John Wessels/AFP Photo)
