Large crowds of people flooded to the beach and other outdoor spaces as temperatures reached close to 80 degrees. According to their website, Muscle Beach began in the 1930’s as part of the Works Progress Administration which installed exercise equipment and provided a spot for local body builders and gymnasts to work out. In 1989 the city of Santa Monica renamed it the Original Muscle Beach, so as not to be confused with the one in Venice Beach, and continues to be a workout and gathering spot for gymnasts, acrobats, aerialists, yogis and other like minded individuals.
