A Look at Life in Bangladesh

Workers carry stacks of bricks on their heads through a lot in Narayanganj, Bangladesh, on March 31, 2022. Brick labourers work 12-14 hours a day, six days a week, many lacking basic rights and access to social security. They earn 100 BDT (around $1.16 USD) only after carrying 1,000 bricks. There is a constant demand for bricks as the primary material for construction in Bangladesh, with a population of 160 million and increasing urbanisation. Brick kilns emit toxic fumes containing large amounts of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and oxides of sulphur which are extremely harmful to the eyes, lungs and throat.
