Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has witnessed repeated airstrikes and had only recently been freed from Russian troops by the Ukrainian army. On 24 February, Russian troops had invaded Ukrainian territory starting a conflict that has provoked destruction and a humanitarian crisis since. According to the UNHCR report on the situation of Ukraine released on 11 May, more than six million refugees have fled Ukraine and further 7.7 million people have been displaced internally, making this the fastest growing refugee crisis since World War II.
