A Look at Life in Bangladesh

Farmers arrange bunches of Water Lilies after harvesting them from the wetlands in Munshiganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh on August 27, 2022. Floating through a 5,000 acres of canal, Farmers use their little boats to fetch water lilies and sell them at market. They start working very early in the morning from 6 am in the canal and work till afternoon. The national flower of Bangladesh, Water Lily blooms only at a specific time during Monsoon from July to November. Every flower is carefully hand-picked, collected inside the farmers' little wooden boat, tied in bundles and sold to markets. After working for an entire day, a farmer can pick around 80 to 120 bundles of water lilies. Each bundle consists of 10 water lilies and is sold for BDT 12 to BDT 15 in the retail market. Water Llily Harvesting is a major source of income for more than 250 families during the monsoon. The livelihood of some wetland farmers is based on water lily farming, which they do for about five months a year. An edible vegetable, Water Lily is a favorite dish on the menu for many in this South Asian country. (Photo by Joy Saha/ZUMA Press Wire/Rex Features/Shutterstock)
