A Look at Life in Africa, Part 2/2

An Elephant keeper (R) plays with rescued elephant calves, separated with their mothers or orphaned, at the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, in Samburu, Kenya, 12 October 2022. Reteti sanctuary, which is under the Namunyak Community Conservancy, is said to be home to Kenya’s second largest elephant population. The sanctuary continues to be strained by the overwhelming rescues they need to do, due to the increasing numbers of orphaned or separated elephant calves as a direct results of the ongoing drought in East Africa. The worst drought in 40 years is now threatening the wildlife and conservation efforts in the region, as it continues to dry their pastures and water points causing a threat to an increase in human wildlife conflict. Millions of people are on the verge of starvation as families struggle to put food on the table as they experience severe drought combined with food shortages caused by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
