Flocks of flamingos and other bird species such as the grey heron, kingfisher, avocet and other species are seen as the area consists a wild refuge at the edge of Thessaloniki city. The birds are seen over the sea and the water with the light reflecting on the surface of the colorful dawn light before the sun rises over the horizon. Axios National Park is a natural park of Kalochori Lagoon, Gallikos, Axios, Aliakmon and Loudias river. The natural reserve is under protection after joining the Ramsar Convention and Natura 2000 network.
