A Look at Life in Africa

A participant from Rombo village participates in the high jump during the Maasai Olympics in Kimana district, on December 10, 2022, a sports event first held in 2012, in the Amboseli-Tsavo ecosystem. Usually the event is held every second year, but due to the pandemic the event is 2020 was cancelled, so this years event was the first one in four years. Beginning in August 2022, the four competing warrior villages of Eselengei, Kuku, Mbirikani, and Rombo have engaged in local and regional competitions, culminating in the main event. The sports programme of six track-and-field events is based on traditional warrior skills. Running 200 meters, 800 metres and 5,000 meters, spear throwing, rongo (club) throwing into a windsock, high jump, and 1500 and 100 meters running for girls.
