An elephant seal in the early morning of 25 December, 2022 on the Kerguelen Islands, also known as the Desolation Islands. Located in the sub-Antarctic more than 2,000 miles from Madagascar, they are among the most isolated places on Earth. There are no indigenous inhabitants, but France maintains a presence of 45 to 100 soldiers, scientists, engineers and researchers at the Port-aux-Français scientific base.
