A Look at Life in Lebanon

A woman shops at a supermarket in Beirut, Lebanon, 01 March 2023. Prices of goods in supermarkets are declared in US dollars after the Lebanese caretaker Minister of Economy and Trade had announced on 28 February 2023 that – starting from 01 March 2023 on – supermarkets can start pricing their goods in US dollar amid the country's economic crisis and the weakness of the Lebanese Lira. The decision however does not include vegetables, fruit and tobacco products. The Lira on parallel markets was traded at 88,000 per US dollar on 01 March, which is about more than five times the official rate of 15,000 against the US currency. (Photo by Wael Hamzeh/EPA)
