A Look at Life in Yemen

A general view shows UNESCO-listed buildings in the old city of Sana'a, Yemen, 24 February 2023. The old city of Sana'a, located in a mountainous valley over 7,200 feet above sea level, is a dense warren of centuries-old mud-brick buildings. It is one of the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world with a legacy of 6,000 multi-story tower buildings, 103 mosques and 14 public bathhouses. The old city was listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1986 as an outstanding expression of Yemen's Arab and Muslim traditional culture. In July 2015, it was inducted to the list of World Heritage in danger due to the damage caused to its cultural heritage by heavy rains and associated flood as well as the armed conflict in the country.
