A Look at Life in Japan

Sumo wrestlers hold babies during Nakizumo, the traditional baby crying contest, at Yukigaya Hachiman Shrine in Tokyo, Japan, 29 April 2023. Two babies held by each professional sumo wrestler compete to cry louder. The Nakizumo has been held all over Japan to pray for babies' health and growth as it is believed that babies crying louder are strong to ward off evil. A referee is in the center and sometimes uses a devil mask to scare the babies if they do not start crying. About 100 babies from six-month-old to two and a half-year-old participated in the babies crying contest. (Photo by Kimimasa Mayama/EPA/EFE/Rex Features/Shutterstock)
