The festival, which takes its name from the Shypit waterfall nearby, is timed to coincide with Kupala Night, a midsummer holiday celebrated in slavic countries. The festival, which has no organizers and is created organically by each year's participants, celebrates the hippie culture and lifestyle which was forbidden during the Soviet era. Participants who have been coming to the festival for several years claimed attendance was down this year due to the war, with many people evacuated, others serving in the military and the presence of police and military roaming the grounds stopping men and ordering them to report for screening to see if they are eligible to serve has also kept many away.
