A Super Puma rescue helicopter refuels in the Rijpfjord north of Svalbard enroute to Russian scientific vessel Severny Polyus caught in the arctic ice some 440km south of the north pole on June 6, 2023. A Russian national onboard the ship was evacuated at the request of their Russian counterparts. The Norwegian authorities launched a Super Puma helicopter from Longyearbyen, the main town of Svalbard, 500 nautical miles (925 km) away, to evacuate the Russian, whose state of health has was deemed too critical to be treated on board ship. “It's at the extreme limit of what the helicopter can do” in terms of range, spokesman for the Norwegian Rescue Center in Bodo, Rune Danielsen, told AFP.
