A Look at Life in Japan

Visitors ride on boats to enjoy viewing cherry blossoms starting to bloom on Chidorigafuchi Moat in Tokyo, Japan, 02 April 2024. The flower is a symbol of the arrival of spring in Japan. Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced in 2022 that the cherry blossom flowering dates have been getting earlier at a rate of change of 1.1 days per decade since 1953. According to the agency data, cherry blossom flowering average data between 1991- 2020 was five days earlier than the average data between 1961-1990. The long-term temperature rise may be one factor in the flowering date getting earlier, JMA has said. The blooming start in Tokyo in 2024 was five days later than the average year and 15 days later than in 2023. (Photo by Kimimasa Mayama/EPA)
