A pikeman, a member of The Marquis of Winchester Regiment takes part in a re-enactment of the 1645 English Civil War, at Old Basing House near Basingstoke south east England, on September 17, 2023. After the decisive defeat of King Charles I's army at Naseby in Northamptonshire in June 1645 Oliver Cromwell led part of the New Model Army to “mop up” remaining royalist bases in Wiltshire and Hampshire. He appeared before Basing House around 8 October, determined to capture this major royalist stronghold, containing both a garrison and civilians, including many Catholics, which had resisted earlier sieges and had long been a thorn in parliament's side. He subjected the place to heavy bombardment and by the 13 had opened up breaches in the defences. He and his men stormed and captured the stronghold on the morning of 14 October.
